California Expands Full Medi-Cal Coverage to Undocumented Children

California will become the first state in the nation to provide low-income undocumented children with total state-subsidized health care. Undocumented children account for a significant portion of the immigration policy in the United States. Considering that California remains a state with one of the highest populations of immigrants, an expansion of healthcare would affect thousands.

An estimated 23% of all immigrants live in California. This historic shift in policy and law will provide health coverage to an estimated 170,000 to 250,000 undocumented children in California. Currently the state of California provides low-income undocumented children with a limited version of Medi-Cal, which only requires the State to provide emergency and pregnancy medical care, leaving thousands of children without any health services.

However, California lawmakers are officially closing the gap in medical coverage with this historic expansion. Senate Bill 75 Officially Expands Full Medi-Cal To All Undocumented Children

Senate Bill 75 will provide qualified children, under the age of 19, with full Medi-Cal coverage. Undocumented children will be eligible for emergency and non-emergency medical services, vision benefits, dental care, mental care as well as substance abuse health services.This health expansion is to take effect on May 16, 2016, and children can begin the process of enrollment into the Medi-Cal Managed Plan today.

This bill will not only expand benefits to undocumented children currently on the limited version of Medi-Cal, but also the thousands of undocumented children in poverty who are currently without any healthcare coverage. Immigration status will no longer be a barrier to receiving California’s state subsidized healthcare. Undocumented children in California will be the first in the Nation to receive full health coverage by a state government.
