Latino Voters and Polling More Important Than Ever

There are over 55 million Latinos living in the United States – 17% of the population and the largest minority. During the on-going election season, there’s been a lot of articles talking about how important the Latino voting bloc will be in November. Miami pollster Fernand Amandi called them maybe “the most important voters in the U.S.”. Univision has even set up the first Spanish Lie Detector – a fact checker for the campaign season.

What really caught our eye was some interesting polls and maps by Pew Research on the Latino community. One poll asks whether it’s necessary to speak Spanish in order to be considered a Hispanic? What do you think of the results? Do you think speaking the language is necessary of being part of the Hispanic community? The answers likely differ by age, many of the younger generation are more likely to be born in US and perhaps less likely to have learned Spanish.

Besides polls, the site also has an interactive graph showing where the Hispanic voting population is concentrated across the U.S. California has more Hispanics than any other state in the U.S. – 6.9 million are eligible to vote which is more than 25% of the Hispanic voting population.
